Search both directions first. A workable one-night trip arrives by early afternoon and leaves after lunch the next day, with a later option if available. Buy the reservable legs through the operator and keep the ticket offline. If connecting through Figueres, distinguish the bus and conventional railway area from Figueres Vilafant high-speed station and allow for the transfer between them.

Let luggage choose the address

Cadaqués is compact on a map but steep underfoot. Cobbles, steps and the climb from the bus station make a light overnight bag valuable. Choose accommodation within a comfortable walk of the station and waterfront, then ask about the final approach, lift, reception hours and luggage storage.

Compare central Cadaqués stays, but confirm the exact room and walking route directly with the property. A sea view does not compensate for dragging a large case up inaccessible stairs.

After check-in, walk the old streets around Santa Maria and follow the waterfront without a rigid list. Keep the first dinner in town. The pleasure of staying is that sunset no longer triggers an immediate departure.

Give Portlligat the second morning

The walk to Portlligat crosses a hill and needs more time than the short map distance suggests. The Salvador Dalí House-Museum's official page says advance reservation is mandatory and shows seasonal opening, including winter closure. Secure the timed ticket before making the house the centre of the trip.

Leave the hotel with a generous margin and only a day bag. The museum requires early ticket collection before the slot; follow the current confirmation rather than a remembered rule. Afterward, return to Cadaqués for lunch and luggage instead of attaching the museum finish directly to the coach.

If tickets are sold out, let the bay and town carry the overnight. Walk to Portlligat without claiming to have visited the interior, or choose a short signed coastal section according to wind, heat and footwear. Cadaqués does not need Dalí admission to justify a night, but travellers for whom the house is non-negotiable should not buy inflexible transport first.

Protect the road out

Reach the bus stop at least twenty minutes early. Summer traffic, road controls and weather can slow the approach. Keep water and a layer accessible on the coach, and avoid placing a same-evening flight or non-refundable long-distance train immediately after arrival elsewhere.

If the return is cancelled, contact the operator and hotel before improvising. A taxi across the region is an expensive last resort, not a planned fallback. The sensible protection is a departure with another service behind it and a travel day that ends before the airport begins.

Pack for the actual transfer rather than the postcard: closed shoes for the uneven waterfront, a refillable bottle, and a small bag that fits under a coach seat. The old town gives you little reason to return to a large suitcase once you leave the station, and carrying less keeps the Portlligat morning flexible if the road or museum timing changes.
